Empathy and Self-Care Workshop (Workshop 1)
0900 - 1215

0900 - 1030
Workshop 1
Empathy is widely agreed to be central in quality and efficacious health care. The way a health professional engages with and supports the emotions (of whatever kind) of their patients is crucial for outcomes. But it can come at a cost. And what about our own emotions? In many areas of healthcare research suggests that empathy and engaging in emotional conversations is one of the most challenging aspects of being a health professional. This workshop will utilise hands-on activities so attendees understand their beliefs about empathy and shame and ultimately walk away ready to live and breathe compassion in your daily work.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Reflect on, and demonstrate the difference between empathy and sympathy
  • Unpack unconscious beliefs about empathy and shame as an audiologist and human
  • Develop strategies for implementing empathy and compassion into daily work (clinical or otherwise!)

Escape Room Workshop (Workshop 2)
1530 - 1700

1530 - 1700Workshop 2
Due to the multigenerational workforce in Australia, how training is provided will need to adapt in order to empower and engage with all cohorts. An educational escape room is a live action team activity where participants are located (but not physically locked) into a room and answer questions or find clues in order to “escape” / solve a case. This unique type of problem based learning referred to as “gamification” aims to develop higher order thinking and disciplinary knowledge base.
