Workshop 1: Person-centred communication with the complex client: essential practices to support positive outcomes in circumstances with high levels of ambiguity
“Sometimes the greatest adventure is simply a conversation.” -- Amadeus Wolfe
This workshop provides audiologists with the knowledge and skills to improve their confidence in having high-impact conversations with clients who present with challenging behaviours. It will tackle some of the contemporary thinking around counselling and communication dilemmas by challenging misleading statements, clarifying long-standing beliefs, and offering creative and practical solutions to participants to implement in their clinical practice.
We will discuss some essential practices of great client conversation, including the application of counselling frameworks, communication repair strategies and debriefing. The importance of thinking both rationally and intuitively will be highlighted and the need for a toolkit to manage the emotions of clients. Real clinical examples will include complex clients with brain injuries.

This workshop will focus on diagnostic indicators and “red flags”. It will provide an opportunity for audiologists to refine their case history taking, clinical decision making, referral processes and documentation. The aim is to refine and refresh your diagnostic lens, to ensure you provide a comprehensive audiological service to all clients, before they commence their rehabilitation journey. It will begin with a review by an ENT Consultant on what they look for in audiological reports and how to facilitate good information exchange. A diverse range of case studies including both adults and children will be used to guide the discussion.
