Workshop 1: Hearing loss and dementia 0900 - 1215
0900 - 1030 | Workshop 1: Hearing loss and dementia: how can audiologists intervene to improve patients' mental health and overall well-being The association of hearing loss with dementia has become well-known over the last decade, and more recently the association between hearing loss and mental well-being. The prevalence of the risk of dementia increases with the degree of hearing loss (mild 2x; moderate 3x; severe 5x) and hearing loss is the top modifiable risk factor for dementia. This suggests that audiologists may have a role to play in reducing this risk. For mental well-being, those with hearing loss are 2.5 times more likely to have mental health problems, and 4 times more likely to experience depression than adults with no hearing loss. Audiologists regularly come into contact with adults with hearing loss with dementia (or cognitive decline) and mental well-being problems such as depression and anxiety, but many report that they often do not have the skills or knowledge to appropriately support these clients. In this interactive, participatory 3-hr workshop we will identify and explore some of the key issues affecting audiologists and patients, and how to best handle these, with input from UK experts in the field (Sarah Bant and Jane Wild). Delegates will leave the workshop with take-home tips, advice and strategies to use in clinic the following Monday. Be prepared to get stuck in and have some fun! | Facilitators: Dr Melanie Ferguson 1, 2; Dr Dona Jayakody 1-3; and Dr Bec Bennett (via live stream) 1-3 1 Ear Science Institute Australia 2 Curtin University 3 University of Western Australia |

Workshop 2: Increasing clinical awareness 1330 - 1645
1330 - 1500 | Workshop 2: Increasing clinical awareness This workshop will focus on diagnostic indicators and “red flags”. It will provide an opportunity for audiologists to refine their case history taking, clinical decision making, referral processes and documentation. The aim is to refine and refresh your diagnostic lens, to ensure you provide a comprehensive audiological service to all clients, before they commence their rehabilitation journey. It will begin with a review by an ENT Consultant on what they look for in audiological reports and how to facilitate good information exchange. A diverse range of case studies including both adults and children will be used to guide the discussion. | Facilitators: Nicole Irvine, Perth Children's Hospital; Nimi Daya Naran, Audika; Rachel Oliver, Audika; and Dr Shyan Vijayasekaran (via live stream) |
